Summer Research Experience for Teachers (SRET 2023)

A collaboration with Professor Rachel Dickey in the Department of Architecture

A collaboration with the Charlotte Teachers Institute

The mission of the SRET program is to strengthen teaching through intensive summer research collaborations among PreK-12 teachers, university professors, and Ph.D. and undergraduate students. We welcomed four, local Charlotte-Mecklenburg School (CMS) Teaching Fellows onto campus this summer in the Chemistry research lab and the Architecture design studio to further our STEAM collaborative efforts. Two teachers worked with graduate students in the Bejger laboratory synthesizing and characterizing new solid-state materials constructed from molecular building blocks. The second pair of teachers were hosted in Prof. Dickey’s design studio where they worked alongside MS Architecture students on a public installation for the Irwin Creek Greeenway. The entire team met weekly to plan curricula and lesson plans to accompany the Chemistry•Architecture pop-up museum during future school visits.
